Doctors warn of mumps surge

A nationwide outbreak of the mumps has resulted in more than 1600 cases of the infection this year.

The HSE is warning people that as schools and colleges return next month, the number of cases may surge again.

It is the worst outbreak of the viral infection in a decade and the number of infections is still above normal levels.

Dublin and neighbouring areas are the worst affected, with the largest number of cases in 15-24 year olds.
