An Garda Síochána have issued a new plan outlining their intentions to recruit 1,500 new members by 2021. Of these new recruits, at least 1,000 will be deployed to the front-line.
According to An Garda Síochána, the recruitment is part of a restructuring programme that will see “decision making for policing delivery devolved from the centre to the regions and divisions.”
There are currently 28 divisions, but that number will decrease to 19 as the divisions increase in size and become “operationally autonomous” throughout 2020.
The restructuring of the Garda programme is intended to reflect the practices of more effective policing systems currently in operation internationally.
