Brazil to send military to combat Amazon fires

Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has authorised the use of the military to battle the fierce wildfires engulfing the Amazon rainforest over the last number of weeks.

A presidential decree authorising the use of the army means they can be deployed to border areas, indigenous territories and other regions to assist in combating the blazes.

Thousands of people have been marching in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and the capital Brasilia, in protest against the president and his environmental policies.

Bolsonaro has previously stated that rainforest protections are an obstacle to Brazil’s development, despite experts arguing that the Amazon is a vital global source of oxygen.
