Tear gas and water cannons have been used by Hong Kong police in an attempt to subdue protesters.

The protesters themselves threw bricks and petrol bombs near government buildings during a pro-democracy march.

Reuters news agency reported that the activists also set fire to a banner proclaiming the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.

The protests and clashes have been ongoing for months, but are starting to escalate at a more rapid rate.
