A challenge to a law criminalising protesters wearing face masks has been rejected by the Hong Kong court.

Protesters have taken to the streets in their thousands to stage flash mob rallies across the city in recent months.

Masks were being worn by the demonstrators in an attempt to hide their identity or protect themselves from tear gas.

The city’s unelected, pro-China leader, Carrie Lam invoked an old, emergency law to introduce the ban on masks last Friday.

Pro-democracy politicians went to the High Court seeking an emergency injunction against the ban.

A senior judge dismissed their injunction demand, a move that will no doubt please the powers that be in Beijing.
